Staying Healthy as You Age

By Donna Stark

We spend a lot of time planning for our future. When we are in high school, we plan for college, when we are in college, we plan for a career, and once we have that career, we start planning for retirement. We plan trips, we plan for a family, we plan next week's meals. All of this planning can seem like it is never-ending, can't it, but have you taken the time to plan for the most important thing in your life? Have you even considered how you are going to maintain your good health once you retire?

Staying Healthy as You Age

Most people approach their golden years completely planned out. Their finances are secure, they know which holidays to keep open for the grandkids, and they have a strong circle of close friends to travel with. Sound like you? Well, if so, your life seems pretty good on paper, but what about your plan to stay healthy? Do you even have a plan? Here are some suggestions on how to create and maintain healthy habits so that your overall wellness doesn't suffer. Take a look.

  • Find the right shoe and exercise - Invest in a pair of top-quality sneakers that are specifically designed for walking. You're going to need them with all the traveling you have planned, but more importantly, you want shoes that will encourage you to exercise at least 30 minutes a couple times a week.
  • Balance yourself - It's no secret that the older you become, the more likely you will be involved in a fall. Balance is key here, so practice yours daily by standing on one foot for 30 seconds at a time. If you want a greater challenge, close your eyes, but make sure you have something to grab onto in case you tip sideways.
  • Strength train - Keep your muscle mass from disappearing by hitting the gym for some strength training or investing in some free weights to have at home. We've all heard the saying, "use it or lose it," right?
  • Eat whole, natural foods - Choosing whole, organic foods is definitely the way to create a lasting foundation of good health. Incorporate plenty of fatty fish, lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and heart-healthy fats into your daily diet.
  • Keep your mind sharp - Here's where your circle of friends come into play. Set up a weekly card game, sign up for dance lessons, or start a book club. Keeping your mind active will help reduce the risk of any mental decline.

Living Your Best Life

Your golden years are a time to celebrate and enjoy life, so make your health plan a good one! Start creating healthy habits now so that when the time comes for all of your plans to unfold, you will be more inclined to follow them ... and healthy enough to enjoy them!
