Tips for Eating Well With the Change of Seasons
By Genevieve Cunningham
Most people love the changing of seasons. And the transition from summer to fall is especially delightful for many. The cool nights and chilly mornings. The comfortable clothes and delicious foods. It's a great time of year. But if we're being honest, this is a time of year when our health starts to suffer. It's too easy to eat too much and stay inside. So what can we do to stay healthy? If you're interested in staying healthy this fall, take a look at these ways to put your health first.
Shop Fresh Foods
Fresh foods are always a good idea. As the season changes, the fresh foods that are offered will also change. But this can bring nutrients into your life as well as new recipes. Check out your local farmers market, grocers that sell local produce, and even local fish and meat markets. The fresher, the better, so get creative and make a menu that's exciting for fall.
Learn New Recipes
Fall -- or any change of season -- is a great time to learn new recipes. These can center around the new season so that you can feel festive. But they can also include important nutrients to keep you healthy. Find some online, ask friends, or take a cooking class. Cooking new things can be a ton of fun, so you can have some fun while improving your health, too.
Keep Your Snacks Intact
Unless your snacks are seasonal fruits or veggies, go ahead and keep these intact. Why? Because fall brings a ton of delicious goodies. If you keep your normal snacks in place, you may be able to avoid the unhealthy snacks and avoid packing in the pounds before the holidays. Stick to the same carrots or almonds or rice cakes. Skip the holiday candies and cheese dips and heavy fall soups. This will be tough at times, but it will be worth it as your waist stays the same all season long.
It can actually be both fun and healthy to change your menu with the season. It brings a nice change of pace, but may also push your body toward better health. Win-win! Use these tips to help you do both. With a little willingness to change and some careful planning, you may be able to get your health moving in the right direction no matter the season or time of year.
