3 Safety Tips for Your Medications
By Brandi Goodman
Medication comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and doses. What may be used to mask pain for one person can help another with their mental struggles. No matter the kind you're using or the reason for it, medications need to be used with safety in mind. These three safety tips for your medications can help you take them properly and ensure your well-being.
Purchase a Pillbox
Many people use pillboxes as organizational tools. You can put each medication you need for the day in the corresponding day of the week location in the box. Some even offer an a.m. and p.m. slot so you know whether you require a morning dose or a nighttime portion. Be careful not to mix up your medications so you don't take too much or too little of what your body needs.
Lock Them Away
It may seem wise to leave your pillbox in a location you'll easily remember. You may even opt to leave it out on the counter altogether. Though this works fine if you're the only one in the home, it is not a safe option if others live there or visit. Your medications should be locked away out of reach of other people who may come across them. You wouldn't want someone else to take medicine intended for you that you need for your health. It would be detrimental to you both.
Follow the Doctor's Orders
Your doctor most likely offered a specific set of orders regarding your medication. Whether you need to take it just once per day or continue utilizing the helpful remedy for 30 days or more, your physician would have disclosed all the details. Always be sure to follow the doctor's orders properly and continue taking your doses as prescribed. Do not take more or less, and do not stop taking them before your required end date. If you start to experience unusual symptoms and feel the medication may be doing more harm than good, consult your doctor promptly.
Keeping your medications locked away from others and organized carefully are safe procedures you should always follow. Stick with your doctor's orders and use the medication properly so it can help to ease the symptoms you're experiencing. Medication safety is an important thing to remember to keep both you and anyone else in your household healthy and well.
