3 Good Reasons to Add More Apples to Your Diet

By Genevieve Cunningham

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. You've definitely heard this old adage before. This is such a famous saying, you have to wonder whether there's a little truth behind it. While an apple every day can't really prevent all sickness and all trips to see your doctor, there are some really good reasons to add more apples to your diet. If you're looking for an easy way to improve your diet and overall health, take a look at why adding apples may be a good place to begin.

For Hydration

Apples are 84 percent water. Every time you take a bite, you probably notice the watery juice seeping from the flesh of the apple. This water helps to keep you hydrated and feeling fresh. Though we often think about staying hydrated in the context of how many glasses of water we drink per day, we actually get a huge portion of our water through our diet. And by adding apples, you're improving this consumption and maximizing your health.

For Digestion

Apples are an excellent food for improving digestion. In order to properly digest food, we need both water and fiber -- both of which are found in apples. Too many apples may move digestion too quickly and make your stomach feel upset, but eating a few apples on a regular basis can help keep this system functioning efficiently. You can eat raw apples, add them to a recipe, or even go for straight applesauce, and you'll get the same healthy benefits for your body and overall health.

For Your Teeth

Apples have a slightly gritty texture. When you bite into an apple, it actually helps to clean your teeth. Though nothing can replace brushing regularly, eating an apple at the end of your lunch can help clean the teeth and keep your smile healthy and white. And apples also have essential nutrients that keep every part of your body healthier -- including the teeth! Though this is probably not the main reason that you'll include apples in your diet, it's a nice benefit to enjoy as a result.

Apples are healthy and delicious. And to top it off, they're also incredibly easy to add to your diet and life! Keep them in your regular menu to help you stay full, fill you with nutrients, and bring these potential benefits into your body and everyday life.
