Hair Loss: Why It's Happening and What to Do About It

By Genevieve Cunningham

Hair loss happens. It's not our favorite side effect of aging, and it can be a real confidence killer at first, but in the long run, we know that it's a natural part of getting older. But here's the thing: Hair loss isn't always inevitable. While it can certainly be a condition caused by genetics, there are many other factors at play as well. If you've been experiencing hair loss or thinning, take a look at these common causes, plus some tips for dealing with the change.

Hormones

Hormones can cause a lot of problems in your life. From bad moods to night sweats to weight issues, we already know that hormones can wreak absolute havoc on everyday life and long-term health. But it still surprises many when hormones cause hair loss. If you've found that your hair has been thinning unexpectedly, and there doesn't appear to be a logical reason, consider having your hormones checked for imbalances or other issues.

Stress

This probably doesn't surprise you. You've probably heard sayings about stress and pulling your hair out. Of course, we often think of it as a bit of a hyperbole -- but it can actually be true! When we have too much stress, it can cause our hair to thin. You may notice more hair in the shower or more hair when you brush. If you're losing hair and experiencing a lot of stress, consider lowering your stress to see if it slows down the hair loss or even stops it altogether.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Diet is everything. When we don't get the proper nutrients, our bodies can rebel in multiple ways, one of which is hair loss. If this is the cause of your hair loss, it can be serious. Nutritional deficiencies are nothing to play around with! You may need to see a doctor in order to determine which nutrient you're lacking. You can then change your diet or include supplements in order to stop the loss, boost your health, and feel your best.

Hair loss can be devastating. Even though it is sometimes a natural happening in life, other times, it can be stopped! If you have hair loss, check for these problem areas, make a plan, and get your hair and your health under control.
