Homemade Sugar Scrubs for Soft Skin
By Amy Silva
Many people worry about the harsh ingredients they're putting on their skin. Making your own sugar scrubs is a fun way to experiment with natural products that are free of chemicals and dyes. There are some essential oils that are safe for use in homemade body products, but these sugar scrubs will focus on basic kitchen ingredients to make them more affordable and safer for those who aren't familiar with essential oils. You may have to substitute different ingredients if you have sensitive skin or allergies, but these simple scrubs are a start and should be suitable for most people.
Lip Scrub
In addition to keeping your lips moisturized with a balm, using a scrub from time to time can help keep them soft. An added bonus is it tastes great because of the sweet ingredients. Here is an easy recipe from cosmopolitan.com:
- tsp honey
- tsp brown sugar
- tsp coconut oil
Mix the ingredients and apply to lips without scrubbing. Allow to sit for a few minutes then gently rinse and apply your regular lip balm.
Body Scrub
Body scrubs don't need to be used every time you shower or bathe. A few times a week is enough. Reduce use if you find your skin is irritated by too much use. Here is a simple body scrub from healthline.com (minus the essential oil):
- cup olive oil
- cup brown sugar
Mix both ingredients in a bowl. To be sure consistency is correct, you should be able to pick it up without it running through your fingers as a liquid would. Apply in a circular motion and rinse thoroughly.
Foot Scrub
Keeping feet soft and smooth makes it easier to throw on those heels or flip-flops without worrying about making an appointment for a pedicure beforehand. It's also much more affordable to do pedicures yourself, so you'll save money and time by taking care of your feet on your own. Here is a quick recipe for a homemade foot scrub from StyleCraze.com (minus the essential oil):
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
Mix all three ingredients in a bowl and apply to feet, scrubbing a bit. Allow mixture to sit for 20 minutes then rinse.
Body scrubs made of sugar and other ingredients from your pantry are void of harsh chemicals, fragrances and dyes. They're affordable and they also make great gifts for special occasions and holidays.
