Is Your Back Injury Serious?

By Sara Butler

Back pain happens. In fact, you have a high likelihood of experiencing back pain at some point in your life. If that back pain is due to an injury, which is also common, then how do you know if it’s serious or not? Any pain or injury should be evaluated by a chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic, but to put your mind at ease, here are a few signs that your back injury can’t wait to be examined and you need to come to The Joint pronto!

Sign No. 1: Notable Pain or Swelling

A back injury can cause swelling but if it’s accompanied by more than minor pain or the swelling is severe, then it needs to be evaluated as soon as possible. Any pain that disrupts sleep doesn’t allow you to perform basic movements, or participate in daily activities need medical attention.

Leaving a potentially serious injury untreated can increase your recovery time. It’s best to have it checked by the chiropractor as soon as possible so your body can begin the process of healing.

Sign No. 2: You’re Unable to Stand or Walk

Pain in your back caused by simply walking, standing, or lifting your arms up above your head needs attention. If you feel any tingling or radiating pain down your limbs, then that’s even more of an indicator that something serious may be happening with your spine and needs checked out right away.

Sign No. 3: You’re Unable to Move the Impacted Joint

If you’re walking around like the Tin Man when he needed his oil can, unable to use your back or bend at your waist, then that’s an indication that something more serious is going on. Play it safe and make sure to see the chiropractor right away because it may mean there’s something beyond a pulled muscle impacting your back.

Additional Warning Signs

Strains and sprains that impact the spine can often be treated successfully with ice to reduce swelling and irritation. But if a more significant back injury is rearing its ugly head, then you need professional chiropractic care. If you notice these additional warning signs, see the chiropractor at once:

  • Red streaks across the skin on your back
  • Debilitating pain with walking
  • Bumps or lumps not associated with swelling

Remember, you don’t need an appointment to see a chiropractor at The Joint. So, if you’re in pain there’s no reason not to get to your local chiropractor as soon as possible!
