Chiropractic Care for Delivery Drivers
By Paul Rothbart
Delivery drivers have a tough job in terms of health. This occupation combines three of the activities that can be very hard on the body. Sitting behind the wheel for long periods each day, possibly in traffic, climbing in and out of a truck, up and down stairs, and lifting heavy packages. Add in loading docks that have concrete floors and are usually crowded with freight and equipment and you've got a challenging work environment. I spent some time as a driver and I was often sore and tired. It's a job that requires more care than you might realize. Here are some things for delivery drivers to keep in mind.
Stay Physically Fit
You might think such a physical job would be all that is needed to stay in shape. That is not necessarily the case. Many drivers are overweight and out of shape. Some form of exercise outside of the job is important. Since there is plenty of lifting while working, cardio is the best type of exercise to balance things out and stay fit. Burning calories improves body composition and endurance. Less fatigue on the job lowers the risk of injury. Stretching is also good as that too, will reduce risk.
Proper Technique and Equipment
Always follow the rules of safe lifting. Lift with the legs, never the back. Grasp boxes at opposite corners and keep the load close to the body. Use hand trucks for heavy loads, don't try to tough it out. It's all too easy to injure the back. Take advantage of elevators with heavy loads. Stairs are good for light packages as they provide cardio, just be careful and take your time to avoid tripping. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. The backs of trucks and loading docks can be dangerous.
See a Chiropractor
All of the sitting, lifting and moving around can be very hard on the back and joints. Regular chiropractic care can find any problems and fix them before they get serious. Anyone whose job requires heavy lifting, long periods of sitting, or being on one's feet should consider seeing a chiropractor. For delivery drivers who get the trifecta, it's an especially good idea.
Driving a truck and making deliveries for a living can be a tough gig. It requires staying in shape as well as being smart and cautious. Chiropractic care can also be very helpful in avoiding serious injury and making the job more manageable. If you are a delivery driver, think about stopping by The Joint Chiropractic. It might be the best stop you make this year.
