Keeping Healthy Posture at Home

By Stepy Kamei

Now that we're all spending more time at home than usual, it's important for us to make sure we're keeping our back and spine in good health. You might think that staying close to home makes this easier, but in reality, you may be easily slipping into poor posture and other habits which can cause back pain. Whether you're working from home, spending time trying out a new hobby, or just taking it easy and trying to stay comfortable, it's a good idea to learn what you need to do in order to keep your posture strong for better overall back health.

Setting Up an Ergonomic Workplace

If you're finding yourself in the very common place of needing to suddenly transition to working from home, it's important to be aware of how to keep your posture healthy while working. You may not have realized your office workplace was designed with ergonomics in mind -- maybe your chair features lumbar support, or your computer is placed at a height that doesn't strain your eyes.

It's important to make sure you're keeping that type of support in your new home office space as well. It's worth the time and expense to make sure you aren't hunching or slumped in such a way while working that your neck and spine become strained.

Move and Stretch Often

Your joints and muscles are designed to stay flexible and mobile, so make sure you're getting up to move and stretch often, even if you're mostly confined to your home. At least once an hour, at the very least, stand up and stretch your arms above your head for proper circulation. You can also go for laps around your house or block, if it's safe to do so. Frequent light movement and stretching will prevent inflammation from building up in your joints.
