Invest Yourself in a Lifetime Sport for Good Health

By Tom Herrin

If you want to have better health, you should get regular exercise.  This is a common sense statement.  We all know we should find ways to get more exercise.  The problem is that we have to put forth some kind of effort to achieve that.  For some, joining an exercise class, or simply exercising on your own, works fine. For others, routine exercise can seem like a beating.  They dread the time spent and feel as if they are having to count the minutes.  A good alternative for those who dread the boredom of this is to participate in some kind of sport.  It can often be much easier to become motivated when you are playing a game with set rules and objectives

What Are You Trying to Improve?

Once any of us decides to get into some kind of exercise program, we should evaluate ourselves to determine what we want to improve.  Is it to lose weight?  Is it to improve mobility?  Is it to rehabilitate some part from injury?  It may well be that you want to improve the efficiency of your heart and circulatory system.  This is the most common goal.  If so, setting some kind of regular time frame may be helpful.  The general advice is to get 30 minutes per day of moderate exercise at least five days per week.  If you can do this, you will likely be on your way to steady improvement.

Decide on Preferences

Once you know what your overall goals are, it is best to recognize what kind of personality you have in terms of a sport.  Do you enjoy working with others, or would you rather be in a small group or alone?  How intense would you like your competition to be?  There will be activities for any and all of these types.  Identifying what you feel fits you will help you to be more successful in the long run.

The List Is Long

There are all kinds of activities, and they are not all for you.  Once you find the few that are your thing, you will be good to go.  Whether it is basketball or soccer, golf or tennis, it is all over the place.  You may enjoy the social climate of dancing.  There are clubs for bike riding, running, and hiking.  You will find that there is truly something for everyone.  Go find yours and be healthier.
