How to Live Life After a Brain Injury

By Brandi Goodman

A brain injury can change your life. You may experience difficulty doing the same things you once knew how to do so well. That doesn't mean your life is over. You just need to learn how to live life differently after a brain injury. Here's how.

Seek Support

Chances are, you'll need support from doctors, loved ones, and maybe even strangers after you've experienced a brain injury. There might be some things you can't do on your own and the help of others can be a big blessing. You can also talk to people who have experienced the same thing as you have so that you know you're not alone. A support group for people with a TBI is great to look into.

Set Up Organizational Apps and Reminders

You might experience memory problems after a brain injury. Setting up organizational apps and reminder systems can offer you lots of assistance. You can set timers for when you need to take certain medications. Keep a calendar for appointments and errands. Having these things at your disposal can ensure you can still maintain a relatively normal life.

Make Your Home More Manageable

Some changes may be needed in your home. You want your place as comfortable and easy to manage as possible. This could mean getting rid of rugs that make you fall, installing railings in the bathroom for support, and even getting an automatic door opener. You might struggle to move the same way you did before or even remember how to use a key to get into a door. You never really know how your brain will be affected after an injury so having these measures put into place now can help.

Fuel Your Mind With Food

Certain foods can boost your brain power. You need to fuel your mind so it can be as strong as possible. Focus on eating green vegetables with lots of Vitamin K, folate, and beta carotene. Spinach, broccoli, and kale are ideal. You'll also want to consume fish that provides omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon and tuna are good choices. Walnuts with protein and healthy fat are also helpful, as are berries with antioxidants. Blueberries are particularly beneficial.

March observes Brain Injury Awareness Month. Use this time to learn about brain injuries and how to live life well after you've experienced one. You want to know what to do now should you ever suffer from one down the line. You may still be perfectly capable of living a full life as long as you know what to expect and how to handle it.
