How to Enjoy Healthier Popcorn
By Brandi Swieter
National Popcorn Poppin' Month is a time to enjoy the tasty treat more often. Dousing the popped kernels in butter isn't the ideal solution though. Healthier ways exist to enjoy popcorn that make the snack even more worthwhile to consume this month and at any time in the future.
Buy a Container of Kernels
Yes, there are bags of popcorn ready to stick in the microwave and consume after just a minute or two. However, these versions are loaded with salt, butter, and other less-than-beneficial ingredients. The healthier alternative is to buy a container of kernels that can be popped using various methods at home. They do not contain any oil or extra ingredients that prove harmful and allow people to create any version of popcorn they desire each time.
Use an Air Popper
A special air popper can be purchased to create healthier popcorn. Hot air is all that's needed to turn the kernels into the popped versions people enjoy eating. It prevents the use of oil, which adds extra fat and unhealthy ingredients from encompassing each piece. Cheap versions are available in-store or online that make it easy to create a single serving. A more expensive version may be needed to pop a lot at once that will feed multiple people. It's great for a party.
Add Cinnamon or Spices
Butter, salt, sugar, and melted artificial cheese are some of the commonly used toppings for popcorn. None of these provide much benefit to the snack, and can in fact cause more harm than good. Instead of trying these common options, go for something different. Sprinkle on some cinnamon or other spices for new flavors that don't add on the calories. Plain popcorn isn't tasty to everyone, but adding just a bit of flavoring from a non-calorie ingredient can do the trick.
Pair it with Protein
Instead of filling up on just popcorn, people can keep their portion sizes smaller by pairing their snack with a protein. Dip the popcorn in some peanut butter or eat it with diced cheese for a filling snack that keeps you full for a long time afterwards.
Popcorn makes a healthy treat with benefits to the body as long as people make it right. The whole grain snack offers antioxidants and fiber and remains low in calories as long as things, such as salt and butter, don't get poured onto it. Air pop it right and you'll have a healthy snack in no time.
