February Observances Made Healthy

Each month sees its own share of monthly observances. Holidays are just the beginning, with numerous health awareness months and food shout-outs set. You can celebrate these observances in healthy ways if you know what they are and make a plan. Here's some for February.
American Heart Month
American Heart Month encourages people everywhere to learn more about heart health and how to keep the organ functioning well. This is already a healthy celebration. Do things this month that will help your heart health, such as quitting smoking, drinking more water, getting your 30 minutes of exercise each day, and eating nutritious foods packed with vitamins and antioxidants.
Canned Food Month
Canned foods are not normally advertised as nutritious and great for the body. However, you can celebrate the occasion by choosing the healthier versions of some of the foods out there. Pick low-sodium choices, for example. You should also look for tuna in water instead of oil and fruit that's in water over syrup. These changes can help you cut back on calories and avoid some of the extra salt or sugar usually found in canned goods.
National Children's Dental Health Month
Dental health is important from a young age. Not many young people are going to maintain their oral health by themselves, though. Parents need to teach their kids the importance of brushing their teeth and help encourage them to do so in a fun way. Let your child choose a new toothbrush and toothpaste this month. They'll be more likely to brush if it's with items they chose for themselves.
Low Vision Awareness Month
So many things today hurt our eyes. Some people already suffer from poor vision, and others develop problems with their eyesight as they age. Do what you can to keep your eyes healthy. This includes eating vitamin-rich foods, such as carrots, salmon, spinach, and nuts. You should also wear sunglasses when outdoors and avoid spending too much time looking at the blue light emitted by devices.
These are just a few of the monthly observances held in February. Discover just which celebrations are worth it to you this month and every month thereafter. There's always something that will catch your attention and make you want to participate. Even when it comes time for Chili Day at the end of the month, celebrate in a healthy way with a nutritious recipe. Health and wellness should always be on your priority list no matter the occasion.
