Spring Clean Your Way into Mental Health

By Brandi Goodman

Spring cleaning is a necessary chore in many households. The activity doesn't have to be just that though. Use cleaning as a way to improve your mental health. There's plenty of ways to do so.

Clean When You're Feeling Stressed

Feeling stressed lately? Clean! It can prove beneficial as it keeps your mind on the activity and off of whatever's bothering you. You'll be focusing all your attention on the rooms you have to clean and leave no time for the thing that started stressing you out in the first place.

Turn Up the Joyful Jams

Don't just clean in silence. Turn up the joyful jams you love and feel energized and invigorated in the process. Combining cleaning and music is a great way to help your mental state when you've been feeling down lately. Both are great for stress relief and can help get you in a better mood at times. Listening to melancholy music only dampens your mood. Happy beats, such as "Happy" by Pharell Williams, are great choices for this purpose.

Scrub to Your Heart's Content

The act of scrubbing away the dirtiness of something can be really helpful when you're feeling ashamed of something in your own life. Doing the dishes or cleaning out the bathtub are two options that can really give you the chance to scrub away at the grime and help your mental health in the process.

Let Fresh Air In

Fresh air will do you good. Open up your windows and let fresh air in as you clean. The sunshine and a light breeze can do a lot of wonders for your mental state. The stale air you've been breathing in is filled with toxins that can harm your mind.

Find Cleaning Agents in Your Favorite Scent

Certain scents are great for mental well-being. Lavender eases stress. Lemon is uplifting. Find cleaning agents that include your favorite scent so you can enjoy the smell while you clean and let it put you at ease. You could also use essential oils in a diffuse so the scent fills your home and helps bring you some peace and relief.

Don't just clean in the springtime. Use the activity any time you want to work on bettering your mental health. Cleaning can offer significant stress relief, help clear the chaos and clutter from your life, and help keep your mind occupied. It's beneficial in many ways.
