3 Great Ways to Get Some Sleep
By Genevieve Cunningham
Are you getting enough sleep? If you were to really think about it, the answer would probably be no. Even if you manage to stay in the bed for 8 hours at a time, your sleep is likely full of tossing and turning and waking up multiple times per night. This is the unfortunate reality for most American adults. And while this may not seem like a big problem, a lack of sleep can cause a decline in mental, physical, and emotional well-being. So what can you do? If you’re interested in getting more sleep every night, take a look at these tips that might help you do it.
Spend Money on Comfort
If you're short on finances, you may not feel like spending much money. But before you shell out money on medication for sleeping, spend some money to make your surroundings as comfortable as possible. Buy a new supportive pillow. Buy blackout curtains. Buy an eye mask and a sound machine and a new mattress if you need it. The more comfortable you feel, the easier it's going to be to get the sleep you need, so spend money here to save big later.
Leave Your Phone Off
Technology is good for so many different areas of our lives … but sleep isn’t one of them. Changes are good that, when you can’t sleep, you reach for your phone. And then you spend hours looking at nothing. Or at least not at anything important. This stimulates the eyes and the mind and actually keeps us awake longer. Instead of reaching for the phone, turn it off when you go to bed. Or if you prefer to leave it on, put it across the room, as you’re much less likely to leave your bed to get it. This one step might enable you to get a little more sleep without that constant temptation by your side.
Aromatherapy is powerful. Our sense of smell has a powerful impact on our body. If you really can’t sleep, buy a candle or a diffuser with some oil, and burn it in your room. A sleepy smell -- something like lavender -- helps to promote sleep and helps to keep us in a deeper state of rest once we finally get there.
Getting more sleep is definitely not an easy task. It takes dedication and a series of trial and error. But it’s definitely a task worth taking on. Use these tips to help you get more sleep, and don’t stop trying until you’re getting better sleep and feeling like your best self day in and day out.
