3 Unconventional Ways to Get a Great Workout

By Genevieve Cunningham

Getting in a good workout feels so good. The sweat, the burn, the feeling of progress. There's nothing better. Of course, not everyone agrees that working out feels good. Some people don't like to work out. They like the change it makes in their bodies, but the process -- not so much. So what can you do if the thought of working out fills you with dread? You can get creative! If you're not eager to run out and run a mile or join your local gym, take a look at these three unconventional ways to get in a great workout today.

Climb

As kids, we climb without thinking about it. We climb on furniture. We climb on fences and playgrounds. We climb on everything! As we get older, we begin to understand that this constant climbing isn't socially acceptable, so we stop. But what if we picked up this habit in a more constructive way? Climbing is a good workout! It requires the use of every muscle in the body. It requires us to stretch and lift and pull. Find a local rock wall or even an old playground. Start climbing in small increments, and before long, you'll have a stronger body and a new fun workout to enjoy.

Dance

Dance isn't really unconventional, but the everyday person isn't taking advantage of this very fun, very challenging exercise. If you want, you can join a class or take lessons, but it's not necessary. Putting on some music and dancing in your living room will burn massive calories and help you work your muscles. You can do this alone, with your friends, and even with your kids. Give this a try if you're looking for a little more fun in your normal routine.

Jump

Jumping is so tough. It's a great workout for the legs, and it also burns a lot of calories for anyone looking to lose weight. The good news is that you have a lot of options for jumping. You can do jumping jacks, jump squats, or vertical jumps. You can jump rope or jump on a trampoline. It's fun, it's challenging, and it's easy to do! But be careful: If you have knee or hip problems, get the all-clear from your doctor before taking part in this activity.

Working out isn't meant to be torture. It's meant to be fun. If you're not loving your workout routine, don't be afraid to change it up. Use these slightly unconventional workouts, and start getting in better shape as soon as today.
