Eat More Pears for a Healthier You

By Brandi Swieter

Most people focus on apples during the fall due to their abundance. Apples always seem to be everywhere. Caramel apples fill the shelves at stores. Apple picking is a favorite pastime at local orchards. Many forget that the pear is also in season at the same time. It provides many of the same benefits of the apple and can help create a healthier you if you consume more of them.

Low-Calorie Snack

Pears make a low calorie snack. An entire pear contains roughly 100 calories, which is the common goal to shoot for in a between-meal treat. Anyone hoping to work on their weight or at least not overeat can enjoy a pear without worry.

Plenty of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is necessary for immune health. This is especially true during the fall and winter months when it's cold season. Pears contain about 12 percent of the daily recommended intake of the vitamin. Choose red pears and receive even more benefits due to the additional antioxidants found within.

Vitamin K and Potassium

Anyone wanting a boost in energy can get it when eating a pear. It has plenty of potassium and Vitamin K. These nutrients also work well for counteracting the effects of sodium and improving bone health. Vitamin K especially works to prevent the buildup of calcium in the arteries. Each of these is essential to overall wellness.

Flowing With Fiber

Apples are well-known for their fiber content, yet they only provide about 4 grams of fiber on average. Pears can provide 6 grams. By flowing with fiber, pears are able to assist with the digestive tract and keeping it working as intended. This helps people stay regular and bloat-free.

A Mix of Other Nutrients

Vitamin K, Vitamin C, fiber, and potassium are not the only nutrients found in pears. They actually contain a full mix of other nutrients vital to the body. These others may come in smaller amounts, but they are still worthwhile. Calcium, magnesium, copper, and manganese are just a few of the possibilities. They work together to boost immunity and keep systems within the body functioning.

Pears are just as good as apples even if they are aren't featured as often. Enjoy more pears for a different taste and a slew of benefits. There are multiple to choose from, such as the Asian pear that appears more orange or the red pear that has a reddened hue.
