How You Can Serve the Community In Times of Need

By Brandi Goodman

Without people, there would be no community. In times of need, you should do what you can to help out the community you belong to. While you, yourself, may be doing well, your neighbors and friends could be suffering. Find ways to serve your community and help out where you can for the betterment of everyone.

Drop Off Meals and Supplies to Elderly Neighbors

Some of your elderly neighbors may struggle to get out and about for the supplies and meals they need. Check in on them. See if you can run to the store and pick up some of their necessities. Drop these meals and supplies off at their doorstep with a note to make their day.

Volunteer With Schools and Churches

Schools and churches may need volunteers to package meals, gather supplies, or help students or families. Check in with a local church or school and see what they may need from you. Some may not need outside volunteers at the time, but could require help for something in the future. They may also have some guidance on those places that do need assistance currently where your time would better be served.

Donate Supplies to Hospitals and Nursing Homes

Hospitals and nursing homes may sometimes run low on supplies when they have lots of patients to care for. If you're able to sew, you may be able to make masks. If you have extra cleaning or wound care supplies on hand, perhaps because you were injured in the past and used these things at home, you can now pass those things on to places that require them. Help and supplies are always needed somewhere.

Offer to Babysit

Perhaps you know a working parent. Offer to babysit their kids for their shift. Not everyone has a back-up plan if their daycare or school were to close. Knowing that there's someone in the neighborhood who can help in a pinch can be a major relief. Maybe a neighbor has older children who are capable of staying home alone. You could still offer to check in on them from time to time or help keep an eye on the place.

Help one person within your community, and you help everyone. An entire community filled with helpful neighbors and supportive friends is a strong, and wonderful place. Do what you can to serve your neighborhood in times of need. It will provide you with a sense of accomplishment and feeling of gratitude knowing you were able to help someone.
