Use Weights to Help as You Age
By Tom Herrin
There are times when many of us feel that aging is a curse. We often begin to feel that we are losing our abilities, both physically and mentally. While some of this is natural, some of it can be prevented or slowed, if we will take action in the right way. Continuing to challenge ourselves both in every way possible. Studies have shown how using our minds to solve challenging problems can help to preserve and develop it. At the same time, using physical activities in the right way may be able to support our overall health. Weight training has shown to have a solid impact on health.
Protect Your Mental Health
It is no secret that mental health is a huge issue in the world today. There is finally more attention being given to it, and there is a realization that many people experience problems with it. Weight training appears to be able to help with this in several ways. One is that it can build confidence and fight depression. For many years it has been known that older individuals frequently suffer from issues with depression. Studies have shown great success improving overall mental health through weight training.
Stay Trim
As we age, we tend to put on fat. Some of it may be due to the fact that we fail to build muscle and burn calories. We develop a lot of bad habits and accept the consequences. Weight training is a proven way to burn fat. It can help to increase the metabolism and build muscle mass. Both of these things are known to help burn fat. It also can help our bodies to make more efficient use of the nutrients we take in.
Continue to Do for Ourselves
Most of us enjoy our independence. It gives us a sense of personal freedom. When we become dependent upon others to do the things that we have always done for ourselves, it can be deflating. Once we get to that point, we may deteriorate as we may feel we have nothing to look forward to. When we work out with weights, we may be able to maintain our abilities and keep them sharper. Simple things such as standing up from a chair and walking can be a challenge for some. If weight training helps us to maintain a sufficient level of function to do these things, it will be a win.
