Fitness for Kids in the Fall

By Donna Stark

The long days of basking under the summer sun with our children may be weeks behind us, but that doesn't mean it's time to head inside and keep everyone behind closed doors. Outside play is still very important for our little ones, so don't let that drop in temperature limit their fun. Sure, the fresh, crisp air and the shorter days may dictate how long they can be outside, but there is still plenty of warmth and enough daylight that you can utilize to keep your children both healthy and active. Take a look.

Apple Orchards and Pumpkin Patches

Picking apples and selecting pumpkins can certainly give your little ones a good workout, but the best part about it is that they may not even realize how much work they are doing. Most orchards and pumpkin patches offer a wide variety of activities and games that will keep your children preoccupied and focused on fun!

Raking Leaves

They may put up a fight at first, but as soon as your children are outdoors and helping you rake those leaves, those frowns will turn into the biggest smiles you have seen since summer. Encourage some play while working and get ready for squeals of excitement when you tell your kids they can dive into that massive pile of leaves before they get bagged up!

Hiking and Scavenger Hunts

Lace up your sneakers, enjoy the best of what Mother Nature has to offer, and kill two birds with one stone by going on a nature scavenger hunt during your weekend hike. It's a great way to engage your children in the landscape around them while also making sure they are getting plenty of physical activity for the day.

Corn Mazes

You may think a corn maze will only last for a few minutes, but if you choose a moderately difficult one, you can definitely count on getting a decent workout in. And although some people like to "beat the clock," use this time to wander around and explore instead. It makes for a great walk and you may even surprise yourself with how long you remain "lost!"

Keep Moving During Fall

Don't let the colder air of fall limit the activities that you and your children are involved in. Just grab a jacket, dress in layers, and continue to head outdoors for a season full of fun and fitness! It's a wonderful time of year to make lasting memories!
