Getting the Most From Your Gym

By Donna Stark

Have you decided it's time to improve your health and fitness? Are you thinking about joining the gym down the road that so many of your friends belong to? It's a big decision to make, isn't it? Because in addition to the time and commitment you are signing yourself up for, you are also adding an extra bill to your monthly budget, so you are going to want to make sure it is worth it. And how do you do that? Well, you come up with a no-fail plan and you take advantage of everything the gym has to offer! Here are some tips on how to do that!

Design a Schedule

The easiest way to waste your money and become disappointed with your fitness journey is to skip your workouts. If you sign up for a membership thinking that you will go five times a week, then make sure you actually go five times a week. Creating a fitness plan that you can realistically stick to and making sure it works with your already busy schedule is key for success.

Use the Equipment

You may feel overwhelmed or intimidated by all of the machines and equipment but don't let that limit your progress! If you are unsure how to use a machine or whether you are using the proper form, just ask! Most gyms have staff that are more than happy to answer any questions, and if you want a more in-depth and personal experience, consider hiring a personal trainer.

Try the Classes

Trying something new and going to your gym's classes is a great way to lose the boredom, boost your motivation, and learn new ways to exercise. Classes are also a fun way to meet new people or to work out with friends and family.

Go Swimming

You can't go wrong with swimming, yet so many people avoid the pool at their gym. If you need a low-impact workout that is easy on the joints or if you want to give yourself a serious, full-body workout, bring your suit the next time you plan to exercise ... and give yourself enough time to enjoy the sauna afterward!

Track Your Progress

It's hard to see your progress from week to week and if you don't remember where you were last month, or even when you started, it's easy to lose motivation. Keeping track of the weight you lift or the pounds you drop is a great way to keep those goals in your sight, so look for fitness apps that can help with this or do it old-school style and jot it down on paper!

Making it Work

Designing the best fitness routine and sticking to it is hard work, but the end result is worth it! So take advantage of everything you are paying for with your gym membership and keep your motivation up! Your future self will thank you for it!
