Do You Struggle with Sugar?

By Tom Herrin

For many people, sugar can be a curse.  It can consume them.  For many years, people have tried to find ways to have foods or drinks that have a sweet flavor without the risks associated with sugar.  As far back as a thousand years or more, there has been an effort to find a substitute.  One product was made from lead, and it is believed to have caused some extremely serious health problems.  Around 140 years ago, a good, safe product was finally made available that could work for us.  This was saccharin.  Even this caused a scare some years ago when it was accused of causing cancer in some lab animals.  The testing was found to be flawed and saccharin was continued.  It is still in use today.  There are also some newer products available that may taste even more like sugar.

Diabetic Life Is Better Today

At one time, diabetics had to sacrifice many of the foods and drinks they would like to enjoy because of the risks associated with consuming sugar.  Today they are able to safely eat and drink most of the same foods and drinks as everyone else due to the availability and use of sugar substitutes.  It may be one of the greatest developments made as far as the impact it has made on countless lives of those who suffer from diabetes.

Watching Calories and Sugar

We all know people who try to count calories.  Many of us choose sugar-free foods and drinks as a way to decrease our calorie intake.  It may work, and it may not.  Some studies have indicated that sugar-free foods and drinks may actually increase hunger.  The result is taking in more calories and never making any kind of change in weight.  I know lots of individuals who drink sugar-free drinks throughout the day and continue to struggle with obesity.

Sugar Is Not All Bad

Many people are able to consume sugar without having any of the problems we see.  A lot of this is due to the fact that they are not addicted to sugar, that is, they can have a sweet treat and leave it alone.  If we can avoid reaching for another and another, we will likely be fine.  Unless we are diabetic, a little sugar should not be a problem.  Like so many other things, having sugar in moderation should be no problem.
