Using Your Hands May Do Wonders For Your Mind

By Tom Herrin

A lot of people are constantly bogged down by anything and everything.  Life in general can pile up and weigh people down.  There seems to be plenty of programs and gimmicks that can be used to relieve stress and provide an alternative to all of the hectic activities and the rat race in general.  If they look back through the years, they may find that people tended to have some good coping skills without having to resort to something that comes pre-packaged as a fix.  Many people found good use of their time pursuing activities with their hands.  There were plenty of craftsmen around, each with his or her own special talent that might have been shared with others through trading skills or products.

It Has Unlimited Variety

Working with the hands to create something, often referred to as crafting, can serve a great purpose to relieve stress and get the mind off of the abundant things people have to worry about.  It is pretty easy to become preoccupied with jobs, finances, and so many of the everyday worries that abound.  Working with the hands can serve to block out those thoughts and turn the focus on creating something that can be a source of success.  A willingness to try something new and challenging can build a greater sense of confidence.

It May Successfully Replace More Strenuous Activities

The mere mention of doing something with the hands can cause some people to think of hard physical labor.  This does not have to be the case.  Many of these activities can be peaceful and soothing.  The effect has been compared to meditation in which people are able to block out other things and give their full attention and concentration to the task they are performing.  It can serve as a pretty good means of serving to avert depression as the feeling of doing something productive is surpassed by the successful completion of the task with the finished product.

Crafting Can Mean Sharing

As in days past, each individual may have entirely different abilities.  Some people may knit, others may quilt, some may build furniture, others may paint.  When people engage in crafting, they may be able to excel in areas that could allow them to exchange their talents for those of someone else.  This can add to the feeling of reward by doing something that may be used and enjoyed by others.  If you would like to give it a try, it doesn’t take much.  A simple craft store can provide ideas, and an investment of only a few dollars may begin a useful experiment.
