Make Exercise Work for You

By Tom Herrin

People often feel the need to follow whatever others do.  It may seem that, if it works for so many others, it will work for them as well.  It is true that many things happen in that way, but that is not the case for everything.  As everyone's needs vary, so do the kinds of things they may need in the way of something such as exercise.  For some, a well-designed program can provide a sense of security and direction.  For others, there may be a need to customize activity so that they are able to accomplish their many tasks they face each day.  In such cases, finding a way to exercise in less time may fill the bill.

Runner or Walker?

Some people really enjoy running or jogging.  It becomes a lifelong passion for them.  In such cases, it works if they can continue to make time for it.  For others, their day is so packed full that they have a need to find alternative ways to get the job done.  For those who love running, all is not lost.  It has been proven that they may still have success and reduce their workout time considerably.  In some studies, it has been shown that people who run seven minutes per day may be able to reduce their chances of death from heart disease by as much as 45 percent.  This may provide a little comfort for those who fear they are shorting themselves if they don't put in a full session.

Pedal and Be Happy

There has always been a significant connection between happiness and health.  Most people seem to be able to be healthier when they have a brighter outlook on life.  One study of people who rode a stationary bike for 10 minutes per day revealed that they were happier and performed better on mental tasks.  Since this kind of activity may be done in a very controlled environment, it can be a winning situation for all.

Make Decisions Early

Any time we choose to shorten our routines, it is best to make a decision early.  In that case, we can do so with all of our facts in mind.  Setting goals as to what we expect to accomplish with our program can help to guide us as we determine what to keep and what to cut.  Good planning is almost always a formula for success.
