How Chiropractic Care and Osteopathy Are Alike
Chiropractic care and osteopathic medicine have gone together like bread and butter for decades. Osteopathy refers to the treatment of the whole body and specifically the musculoskeletal system. Many osteopaths specialize in treating low back pain. Chiropractic also focuses on the same things but takes on the additional focus of the nervous system, which flows through our body and can affect several different areas and organs. Chiropractors correct lower back pain by using spinal manipulation to correct any misalignments and relieve nerve pressure. Osteopaths use similar treatment methods that are also natural and non-invasive but have the ability to prescribe medications.
When chiropractors find subluxations in the spine, they correct them adjusting the affecting area. There are several methods of adjustment, including toggle drop, lumbar roll, and activator. All of the adjustment methods utilize the chiropractor’s hands or special adjustment device and are completely natural and non-invasive. Chiropractors also offer other supplementary treatments including hot/cold therapy, muscle stimulation, and ultrasound. After being thoroughly examine by a chiropractor, he or she can develop a custom wellness plan that will include any treatments deemed appropriate and necessary to promote optimal healing.
Osteopathic doctors do many of the same things as chiropractors, and can be used in conjunction with spinal manipulation. Osteopaths also manipulate the body with the intention of treating abnormalities, restore muscle balance, and promoting healthy blood circulation. While osteopathic doctors tend to shy away from using pharmaceutical drugs in their treatment plans, they may prescribe them if deemed necessary. However, these doctors would prefer to treat the patient with natural methods whenever possible. Just as chiropractors, osteopathic doctors focus on the whole body and the spine’s role in its health. When used together, both therapies can help patients alleviate low back pain and decrease recovery time.
