3 Steps for Picking The Perfect Mattress

It's no secret that good sleep is an important element of living a healthy and productive life. A restful night of sleep can lead to increased energy, improved memory, heightened attention span, and a healthier weight. And, to the contrary, not sleeping well can inflict a whole host of health problems, including an increased appetite, the inability to focus, and a compromised immune system.

So what are the components that go into a good night's sleep? A healthy and balanced dinner, a lack of alcoholic beverages, exercise, and, of course, a comfortable mattress. The last one is actually really important, too- in a sleep survey, nine out of 10 participants believed that a good mattress was one of the most important factors for a restful sleep. A sub-par mattress can lead to tossing and turning and, ultimately, chronic back and joint pain.

If you already suffer from chronic pain, stop by The Joint for affordable and effective chiropractic care. Our highly qualified doctors of chiropractic specialize in healing the back in its entirety, and helping you to get a good nights sleep and achieving optimal health. So, with that in mind, here are a few steps to picking the best mattress for you:

Step #1: Know when it's time for a new one.

How long have you had your current mattress? Three years? Five years? Ten years? Don't remember? Well, it may be time to replace that thing (and the box spring, as well). Experts recommend that you invest in a new mattress once every eight years or so. However, if you've only had your mattress for five years and yet you continuously wake up with back pain or it's just plain uncomfortable to sleep on, it may be time to replace it now. Check to see if the company you bought your last one from offers warranties on their mattresses.

Step #2: Give it a test run before you buy it.

Ok, so I'm not saying that you should get cozy and take a nap in your local furniture store. However, it's totally appropriate (and expected) for you to test the mattresses out before you buy one. Take about 20 minutes to lay on it, test out various sleep positions, make sure that it fits your body, and generally get a feel for how comfortable it is. You'll be glad that you did when you have your perfect mattress.

Step #3: Don't buy for the brand.

Because almost all mattress coils are produced by the same manufacturer, ignore the impulse to buy a mattress simply because it's a "popular" brand. Instead, buy the mattress that feels the best to you. You'll end up equallly (if not more) satisfied than if you had spent the bigger bucks on a name brand.
