4 Ways to Protect the Eyes and Keep Them Healthy

When it comes to health, many of us think about the really big things. We think about losing weight, keeping the heart healthy, and preventing major diseases like diabetes. We think about avoiding smoking for our lungs and exercising for our waistline. But what about the smaller aspects of our health? Like our eyes! Since our eyes are the way we perceive the world, you would think that we would take better care of them. But this is an aspect of health that often goes forgotten. If you’re ready to take your eye health seriously and make a plan of action, take a look at these tips to incorporate today.

Wear Sunglasses

The sun is damaging to your skin, as you probably already know, but it’s also damaging to your eyes. To protect them, make sure that you’re wearing sunshades when you’re exposed to the brightness of the sun. As an added bonus, this can also protect the skin around the eyes, and prevent the premature development of crow’s feet and age spots.

Eat the Right Foods

Some foods are better suited for eye health. Things such as carrots, salmon, kale, and sunflower seeds all provide nutrients that boost the overall health of the eye. The best way to manage this aspect of taking care of your eyes is by eating a well-balanced diet full of fruits, veggies, and lean meats. Assess your diet from time to time to make sure that it contains plenty of eye boosting foods, and you’re good to go.

Limit the Screen

The screen -- whether it’s a TV, computer, or your phone -- can be really hard on your eyes. It strains them, and even if you don’t notice right away, it can do permanent damage. So should you avoid all screens? That’s impossible, right? Luckily, it’s not so much about avoidance as it is about moderation. Try not to sit in front of the screen all day long, and if you have to, make sure that you’re taking frequent breaks to give your eyes a rest.

Get to the Doctor

Just like anything else, prevention is the best medicine when it comes to the eyes. Make a plan to regularly see an eye doctor. If you’re proactive about it, you may be able to go only once or twice a year and still adequately protect your eyes. The doctor may be able to prevent problems, provide treatment and medication when needed, and offer prescription advice to those who need it. It’s tempting, but don’t skip this step if healthy eyes are a part of your long-term plan.
