How to Get Prepared for Cold and Flu Season
By Genevieve Cunningham
It’s not here yet, but it’s definitely coming. No, not back to school madness. No, not the holidays. Cold and flu season. No one likes this part of the year. We may like the cooling weather and the atmosphere and the changing colors. But sickness? No, thanks! Unfortunately, we don’t get very much say in whether or not we catch a cold or the flu, right? It’s all up to chance. While there is certainly some truth to that statement, there may be a few things that we can do to prepare our bodies for the onslaught of germs. If you would like to avoid the colds and flu of the upcoming season, take a look at these tips.
Start Washing Everything
The more you wash, the fewer germs will make it into your nose or mouth. So what should you wash? Go ahead and get into the practice of washing and wiping down everything. Wash your hands, linens, backpacks, and bags. Wipe down counters and doorknobs and surfaces that get touched often. If you get into this habit now, it’ll be a cinch to continue when the cold and flu germs are rampant.
Take Immune Boosters
The stronger the immune system, the easier it is to fight off germs that try to invade. Luckily, there are plenty of natural ways to boost the immune system. Make sure that you’re eating a diet full of Vitamin C. Buy echinacea supplements, a good multivitamin, and try a supplement meant specifically for the immune system. It can also help to eat a well balanced diet and improve basic body function to further enable your body’s natural defenses.
Get More Rest
The body is better able to fight off infection and illness when it is well rested. Of course, with school about to start, sports coming into season, and the general busyness of fall around the corner, it’s tough to get enough rest! But it’s also crucial. If you really want to improve your chances of avoiding illness, get at least eight hours of sleep per night. Go to bed on time, wake up early, and stick to your schedule every night.
No one wants to be sick. No one likes stuffy noses or catching the flu. It happens, of course, but there are definitely things that you can do to ward it off. Use these tips starting now. By the time cold and flu season rolls around, your body will be ready to fight off the germs and keep you healthier than ever.
