Ready, Set, Eat: Tips for Making Good Food Choices
By Genevieve Cunningham
Food is good. It's really good. There's something so satisfying about grabbing a tasty snack or filling up with a homemade meal. But it may be this love of food that makes maintaining a healthy diet so difficult! It's hard to resist the dessert. It's hard to resist the second helping when it tastes so good. Of course, if we want a healthy body weight and a physique to be proud of, we really need to get control of what goes into our mouths. But how? If you're interested in keeping a healthy diet, take a look at these tips for getting started today.
Research
Before you begin trying to tackle a healthier diet, do a little research. Check out the different dietary theories, and choose one that seems to fit you best. It should fit your body, your goals, and your lifestyle. The more you understand the theory behind your choices, the easier it is to stay on track. Buy some books or browse the internet, but do a ton of research to get informed and prepared.
Make a List
Once you've chosen a theory, make a list of foods and recipes that work well with your new diet. Then hang this list up somewhere visible. When you get a hunger pang, and you would normally reach for a sweet snack, take a quick look at your list instead and choose something else. The idea is to make choosing something else easy. If a list of acceptable items is staring you in the face every day, it's easier to say no to your usual items and give something new (and healthy!) a go instead.
Indulge
Don't restrict yourself so much that you can't function. You shouldn't be so caught up in restrictions that you forget about allowing yourself an occasional treat. Indulge. Do it. And then, after you've satisfied your craving, get back on track. This helps you avoid binges, and it also gives you room to make a mistake. You don't have to be perfect; you just have to be consistent. Leave room for indulgences, and the entire process will be more effective and more fun!
Keeping a healthy diet might seem like a difficult thing. But the truth is that it doesn't have to be such a burden. You just need a plan, some patience, and a bit of effort. Use these tips to help you get moving in the right direction, and be easy with yourself as you transition into healthy eating and a healthier life.
