How to Celebrate Those March Observances

By Brandi Goodman

March will be here sooner than we realize. Though the season isn't quite the start of spring, many people still use the month to start getting their health on a better track for the summer. Lots of monthly observances are held in March as well -- all dictating a goal of health and wellness. Here are some ideas for celebrating a few of the popular ones.

National Nutrition Month

Nutrition Month couldn't come at a better time. People tend to overeat and indulge in heavy foods and snacks throughout the winter. Once March arrives and the spring season is impending, it's time to get that diet back on track. Take the month to rethink your eating choices and start adding more fruits and vegetables to your meal plan. Just a few substitutions to your favorite dishes can really help you up the nutritional factor without having to give up what you love.

National Reading Month

Dr. Seuss was born on March 2. His inspiration still lives on in March's National Reading Month. It encourages everyone to read, read, read, and get that brain growing. There's no other way to celebrate except do what the mantra says. Read! Choose a book in a genre you enjoy and get those pages turning. Your memory improves, cognitive function enhances, and vocabulary expands when you read. Take in all the words you can during this month and hopefully it will inspire you to continue reading regularly throughout your lifetime.

National Kidney Month

Kidney disease is experienced by millions of people each year. National Kidney Month encourages everyone -- especially older adults -- to do what they can to keep their kidneys healthy and working well. You can help yourself by eating right, exercising, and avoiding harmful substances that can do damage to these organs. This means avoiding smoking and drinking, or stopping if you currently engage in these risky behaviors.

Save Your Vision Month

Vision is ever-important. It already starts to diminish as you age. Doing what you can to keep your eyesight intact for as long as possible should be on your list of health goals. Eat vitamin-rich foods that work to enhance eyesight, such as carrots, spinach, salmon, eggs, oranges, and nuts. You also need to be more diligent about limiting your screen time. The blue light from your devices can greatly harm your eyes and your sleep.

No matter which month you're in and which observances you're adhering to, it's important to always keep your well-being in mind. Do what you can to achieve a healthy lifestyle that keeps your body and brain working well.
