How to Fit More Movement Into Your Busy Day
By Genevieve Cunningham
If you're leading a busy life, you're definitely in the majority. It seems as though we're busier than ever before. Between the need for long hours at work and the extra activities that we want to enjoy, we're an extremely busy society. For the most part, being busy is a good thing. It means we're active and involved. But when we're busy, it can be hard to fit in some of our much needed healthy habits -- like movement! If your life is lacking movement because of a busy schedule, take a look at how to fit intentional movement into your already busy day.
Get Organized
The more organized you are, the easier it is to fit in more movement. Maybe this means you wake up a few minutes earlier or go to bed a few minutes later. Maybe it means using your lunch hour as a chance for movement. Maybe it means nixing another activity in favor of exercise. It doesn't matter how you do it, just get organized, plan ahead, and make it a highly prioritized part of your day.
Double Up
Sometimes our best course of action is to double up in order to get more movement. If you're on the phone, consider walking around and burning calories at the same time. If you like to unwind with TV at night, consider doing a quick routine while you watch. Consider taking a jog while you wait for your kid at their practice or lesson. If you live close to work, consider walking. If your only choice is to double up with another activity, do it so that you can have the best of both worlds.
Set Really Small Goals
It doesn't take much movement to make a difference. A lot of people think that if they can't spend at least an hour in the gym, then it's pointless, but that's not true at all. If you don't have any extra time, set some really small goals. Try for a simple five minutes per day. Work toward getting 10 minutes of extra walking. Though it won't change your body over night, even a little bit of movement is better for your long-term health than none at all.
Are you getting enough movement? If not, it's time to make some changes. We need movement for our health and wellness. Use these tips to get a little bit of movement into your day, and enjoy the benefits and the better health that comes with your consistent efforts.
