How to Easily Lower Stress Every Night

By Genevieve Cunningham

Stress. Everyone experiences multiple kinds of stress in life. Between work, school, families, and personal obligations, stress is a common theme for most people. While it's completely normal to deal with stress regularly, even daily, there's no doubt that too much stress can harm your health. Excessive stress can cause high blood pressure, headaches, tight muscles, and a wide array of other negative impacts on our health. So what can we do? If you’re sick of stress in your life, take a look at these effective ways to ease your stress every night.

Light a Candle

Lighting makes a big difference in how we feel. When the lights are too bright and abrasive, it can further exacerbate stress. Instead of allowing your own home to make your stress problems worse, turn off the lights and light a candle. And if you want a double whammy, burn a candle with a relaxing scent -- something like lavender. This lowers stress using multiple senses, which makes it even more effective at lowering stress.

Do Light Exercise

You probably don't want to do anything too strenuous at night. Vigorous exercise can actually ramp up your energy and make it hard to sleep. But a light exercise at night can alleviate some tension and relax the body. Try some gentle stretching, yoga, or an easy walk. This may be enough to work your body and muscles and alleviate some stress, but without ramping you up and keeping you awake all night.

Turn Off the Technology

Technology can absolutely keep you stressed. The light, the constant stimulation, and the content of what we're reading or watching can be stressful. If you want to relax at night, do without technology for an hour or two. You may be surprised at how much this lowers your stress and relaxes your body and mind before bed.

You're going to have to learn to deal with stress. It's not something that we can get through life without. It's an unfortunate fact of life for just about everyone. But learning to reduce stress? That's something that we can do right now to help us feel better every day. Use these tips to lower the stress in your life every night, and your health may begin to improve right away.
