Like It or Not, Take a Vacation for Your Health
By Tom Herrin
Saying that people may not like taking vacations may not sound like a logical statement, but the truth is that many people choose to put them off in the hopes that it will somehow allow them to get ahead. Or they may be of the opinion that they are being prudent and saving something for later. While it sounds like a good idea, it usually fails to serve the intended purpose and becomes a lose-lose thing for the individual. Most companies offer vacations, not only as a reward, but also as a means of recharging workers. It can increase their productivity and lower their accident rate, meaning less time lost.
They May Help Save Your Heart
People who take vacations may actually be protecting themselves against heart problems. Apparently doing so can go a long way toward improving the heart and its function. Studies have shown some remarkable ways it can help. According to one, women who only took vacations once every six years were eight times more likely to develop coronary problems than those who took them twice a year. In another study, men who took regular vacations were 21 percent less likely to die of a heart attack and 32 percent less likely to die of any cause other than something age-related than those who did not take them. Those are amazing figures.
They May Improve Sleep
Studies have shown that vacations are a considerable help for sleep. It seems that it is not just that they sleep well while on vacation. They also appear to have effects that last long after they have returned from that vacation. On average, those in one study were able to sleep an hour longer each night. That is a lot more rest for the weary.
They May Reduce Stress
Most of us probably feel that it is a given that vacations lower stress. The fact is that it may be more involved than that. The role this can play in reducing depression as well can be critical for success in work and family life. Taking a vacation does not have to be expensive or exotic. It simply needs to be a change of pace from the normal routine. It can be a great experience for every member of the family. No matter what we did, I always felt revitalized after having gone. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. Take one, and see the difference.
