Ways to Drink More Water

By Paul Rothbart

It's no secret that water is vital to survival. It's also fairly commonly known that many people don't drink enough of it to maintain their highest level of health. It's not always easy to get the recommended amounts of water each day. People are busy with work and tend to reach for coffee and caffeinated drinks. There are even those who don't particularly like water. It is a chore to ingest it for these people. There are ways to increase water intake and make it less difficult. Here are some you can try.

Add Flavor to It

Many people have trouble drinking water because they find it bland and flavorless. This is easily remedied. Fill a carafe with water and add your favorite fruit, vegetable, or herb. By letting these ingredients steep, the water will be infused with the flavor, making it easier and tastier to drink. Some good choices for fruit are strawberries, lemon, and grapefruit. For vegetables, cucumbers and celery are very refreshing. Try mint or lavender for an herbal infusion. Mix and match to find your favorite combinations.

Have a Glass of Water After Using the Bathroom

The idea here is to make having a glass of water a habit by tying to an already ingrained habit. When nature calls, as it frequently does, you have to answer. By grabbing a glass of water after finishing in the bathroom, hydrating becomes a habit. Eventually, you will do it without even thinking about it.

Have Some Water Before Every Meal

This is another way to ingrain drinking water with an already established habit. Drink some water before each meal, even before snacks. You'll get more water than you realize and not even know it's happening. You'll probably eat less, as well, meaning you'll consume fewer calories to help you watch your waistline.

Get a Water Bottle

There are a large variety of water bottles available to let you carry some along wherever you go. Get in the habit of keeping a full bottle in the refrigerator to grab on your way out. You can drink it in transit to your destination or sip it while you go about your business. It's easier to drink a little at a time than to chug by the glass.

Try Sparkling or Mineral Water

If water seems bland to you, try seltzer or mineral water. The sparkle of carbonation may boost the flavor enough to make the drink more enjoyable. Mineral water is a very popular option that you may enjoy much more than plain water. You can mix it up to add variety to your hydration.

Water is so important to good health and for a number of reasons, many people don't get enough. Try one or more of these tips to make it easier to stay hydrated.
