Does Your Unnatural Work Schedule Harm Health?

By Tom Herrin

Everyone is not on the same schedule, but it is obvious that most people have figured that out.  With the variety of demands on workers today, many are employed in places that are in operation around the clock.  Whether it is stores, hospitals, factories, or whatever, many never close their doors.  This is a necessity for many.  For workers, it may be good as some of these workplaces offer financial incentives for those who work shifts.  The downside is that, in many instances, there may be a negative impact on health.  Maintaining good health under these conditions may take some extra effort and consideration.

Common Health Issues May Increase

For those who work shifts, some of the things that are known to be health risks may be at a higher level of occurrence.  There are a lot of heart-related issues today as well as far more diabetes.  They have been thought of as almost epidemics in some places.  Studies have shown that those who work shifts may be at a greater risk of developing these problems.  Awareness is critical in order to avoid suffering some of these problems.

Plan for Intervention

Many companies who employ shift workers take some positive steps to help those workers through better education and training.  Something that individuals can do is make certain that they eat good balanced meals on a good schedule.  Another thing that is always important is making sure to have a good exercise program.  Maintaining some kind of regular exercise is a must.  One suggestion is for those who work shifts to walk around a little prior to beginning their shift and taking good breaks to move around during the shift.

Be a Part of the Solution

Anytime we deal with something that poses a challenge, it is best if we can rise to it.  Working shifts can be a significant challenge.  If we fail to plan for the possible problems, we risk being swallowed up in them.  In order to come out in good shape, we have to be really aware of our situation.  If we have a family, we need to make every effort to remain a part of it even though we may find ourselves left out at times due to natural circumstances.  Plan ahead and plan well and your work schedule will neither interfere with your health or your family relationships.
