Your Biggest Strength: Recognizing Your Weakness(es)

By Gary Picariello

Is it politically correct anymore to recognize that we are not perfect at everything? Of course, it only makes sense that we always want to present ourselves as perfect -- or at the very least happy. However, the truth is that happiness is a momentary thing, which is probably why we constantly try to feed the addiction. Here's a big hint: you'll be a whole lot happier if you recognize your weakness(es).

Studies show that the biggest difference between the most successful people on the planet and all those that wish they were successful is that "successful individuals know themselves very, very well." And what's more, they accept themselves warts and all.

The Value of Perseverance

I don't want to throw a bunch of Vince Lombardi NFL locker room hoo-haa in your face. If you're really interested you can Google him and enlighten yourself. I will, however, underscore a bit of the Lombardi mentality at you: he knew losing a football game was inevitable. But he also knew that giving your maximum preparation could lower the odds of losing. The same thing goes for your job, your relationships, your health. Whatever it is.

In life, you are gonna be tested and it's your ability or inability to persevere that will make all the difference between you and every person out there who is striving to get ahead.

Don't be Afraid to Strike Out

You may not be aware that Babe Ruth, the original Sultan of Swat, struck out more times in his career than any other major league player. Oddly enough, Ruth also hit more home runs than any player that wasn't thought to be using steroids. Coincidence? It doesn't matter if you're a baker, artist or bricklayer or a right fielder for the Yankees -- you know yourself best, and sometimes you have to keep swinging for the fences over and over and over to get it right. Or adjust and hit singles.

You know what your weaknesses are. And deep down you know what you need to do to improve or make changes. And if you don't know, you need to seek help.  But if you don't roll the dice and take the risk there's someone else who will.

When you know yourself and recognize your weaknesses, it opens new doors for you and creates new ways of finding solutions to your problems. You don't need to be a CEO to get ahead. You just need to be yourself.
