How to Organize Your Home and Your Life

By Sandy Schroeder

If we really think about it, when we organize our home we automatically organize our life. When everything has a place, precious minutes in the morning are not lost to frantic searches. Later, at night, everything flows smoothly when the kitchen is organized for dinner, and the family room is set up for the whole family. Life just feels better when our homes are organized.

So how do we get organized?

It might start with some key questions like these.

  • What are your family's priorities?
  • Where are you short on storage?
  • Where are the trouble spots?
  • What do you wish for?

Family priorities - If sports, music or art are key areas for your family, consider how you could provide space for them in your family room. Add bookshelves, work tables and good lighting. If your family is all about sports, rethink your outside areas to add basketball hoops or soccer practice areas.

What kind of storage do you need? - Are your bedrooms spilling over with clothes and sports gear? Review your closets for unused items that could be donated. Consider storage chests that fit under the bed to use for seasonal clothes and add hangers that condense items. Streamline the whole area, moving out unused sewing machines or exercise bikes.

Where does your family need help? - Are mornings a disaster as everyone looks for their stuff? Consider installing a table/bookcase near the front door to catch backpacks, totes, homework and keys. If homework is a sticking point in the evening, consider setting up workstations for each person, instead of kids flopping out on the carpet.

What are your dreams? - This might be the time to upgrade fitness equipment in your home, or add a quiet zone in your garden. Others might want a home work area to work on plans for their ultimate job. Still others might want to begin upgrading each room, adding the touches that make it a home instead of just a house.

Practical Solutions

When you start organizing, here are some ideas to consider from WellAndGood.com.

Declutter your living room - Use an ottoman that's a bench, storage chest, footrest, and padded seat to swallow miscellaneous items.

Streamline bathrooms - Use small corner storage cabinets and shelving.

Neaten bedrooms - Park all of those space-taking comforters and extra sheets in large under-bed storage chests or bags.

Sharpen your kitchen - Check out magnetic knife strips that replace giant knife blocks.

Expand your closets - Use hanging shoe organizers and trouser hangers.

As you work your way through the house, make it a habit to review, use, donate and recycle items to fit your family's needs.
