Chronic Ankle Injuries Shown to be Reduced by Chiropractic Care 4th week

Ankle injuries are very common, particularly among athletes or others that engage in vigorous exercise regularly. They rank as the number one injury in 24 different sports, including football, soccer, and basketball.

When people suffer from ankle inversion sprains, they are at a higher risk of chronic ankle instability, and thus re-injury. Helping people recover from ankle injuries quickly and efficiently is the only way to prevent from further recurrences. New research suggests that physical therapy combined with chiropractic care is one of the best ways to accomplish a safe and speedy recovery.

In a study at Durban University, researchers looked at 33 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 45 who had histories of ankle inversion sprains and had suffered an injury in the six weeks prior to beginning. A little over half of the participants engaged in rehabilitation programs that used specific exercises while the rest received high-velocity low amplitude thrust-style manipulations from a chiropractic in addition to the exercise program. Over five weeks, both groups exercised every day. The chiropractic group had six treatments per week with one day of rest in between.

After the five weeks were over, participants self-reported pain levels as well as range of motion skills. When the study ended, the chiropractic group reported reduced pain levels and lower disability scores than the exercise-only group. They were able to increase strength in their injured area as well as reduced inflammation. The results are promising for doctors and chiropractors looking to assist those with recurrent ankle injuries find an end to their frustrating issue.

As more research is done, it is hoped that a multidisciplinary approach to ankle sprains and strains. With so many athletes suffering these injuries every year, particularly young athletes, it is important to find a way to heal patients properly the first time. When a young athlete is at risk for a debilitating and chronic ankle injuries, they could be looking a long road to recovery. By using both traditional physical therapy along with chiropractic treatment, the number of recurrent ankle problems could go down by a large amount, easing the minds of sports and exercise enthusiasts everywhere.
