Neuroplasticity and Chiropractic Care

The central nervous system has two main components; the brain and the spinal cord. Both of these components work together to ensure a level of communication across the body, as well as maintain control over certain body functions and life processes.

The brain has so many different abilities, and we only understand a portion of the brain’s capabilities. As time passes on we gain more of an understanding of what the brain does, how we use our brain, and the power that the human brain holds.

One of the newer discoveries in the brain is the concept of neuroplasticity. This concept involves the brain’s ability to grow, change, and modify itself as new things are learned and as new processes are undergone. The main way that the brain improves our knowledge base is by forming what are called neural pathways. This involves the channels of communication that the brain has for recognizing information and when new neural pathways are formed, mental health, memory, and overall brain functioning improves significantly.

The process of forming new neural pathways and encouraging the development of neuroplasticity is not fully understood, but one possible strategy that is being viewed as a legitimate source of neuroplasticity development is chiropractic care. With the use of chiropractic care, individuals have the opportunity to put their bodies in the best possible position for communication between the brain and other parts of the body. Often times, there are problems with the alignment of the skeleton, mainly in the spine, that impinge communication throughout the nervous system. When this communication is affected by misalignments in the skeleton, then it is difficult for the brain to use pathways that it has already formed let alone to form new neural pathways.

Chiropractic care has played a role in turning so many health problems around and often is associated with solving these problems. In the case of neuroplasticity, there may not be any problem involved in the treatment potential for chiropractic care. However, improvement is always important and neuroplasticity is a crucial component of mental health and of overall brain function.

Chiropractic care does have the ability to help treat mental health issues by increasing blood and nutrient flows throughout the body. With this in mind, spinal adjustments may be able to relieve nerve pressure leading to the brain stem. More studies will need to be conducted on the connection between chiropractic care and brain neuroplasticity but current information shows that those connections could definitely exist.
