Favorite Chair Causing Back Pain? These Tips Can Help
By Paul Rothbart
Most of us have that favorite place to retire to at the end of a long day. It may be an easy chair, a recliner, or a couch. It suits us to a tee and is the perfect spot to relax in front of the television or with a book. It may also be a good place to nap. Over time, that magical seat may start to cause some back pain. You may stiffen up and have trouble standing. The pain may last for a while. It can be disheartening. There are ways to help with this situation. Here is what you can do when your favorite chair betrays you.
Replace It
This one seems obvious and for some people it may be heartbreaking. But like everything else, furniture wears out. Padding becomes compressed, changing the feel. Springs don't support the way they used to. Holes worn into the fabric may leak padding and the footrest mechanism of a recliner can lose screws and stop functioning properly. The thing to do is buy a new one. Don't just grab the first one you see or the one on sale. Try them out, just as you would with a pair of shoes. When we bought my wife a new chair, we spent over an hour making sure she got the right one. It was worth the time spent.
See a Chiropractor
Back pain from sitting can be caused by poor posture. When they finally get to climb into that cozy chair, many people just slump down into it. That may feel comfortable at the time, but it can put a curve into your spine that can eventually cause problems and pain. A chiropractor can find any subluxations caused by your poor posture and make an adjustment. This may ease your pain and make that favorite chair feel like new again.
Make Chiropractic Care a Regular Part of Your Life
After a single adjustment, you're going to go back to your normal life. That means slouching in exhaustion into your chair and starting the process all over again. Poor posture when standing, your job, and household chores can also contribute to back problems and pain. Your neck and joints are other areas that work hard and can develop problems that cause pain. A chiropractic can fix all of these problems. Going regularly, as you would to your doctor or dentist, can keep these problems from ever becoming serious and minimize your pain.
It's great to have that special seat waiting for you at the end of a long day. It's not so great if your back starts to hurt from sitting there. Consider a visit to The Joint Chiropractic. No appointment is needed. You may find that seeing a chiropractor regularly reduces incidents of pain. Help is available. Don't stand for pain. Or sit for it either.
