Proper Ergonomics for Students
By Sara Butler
When people think of the young, they think of people who don’t have a care in the world -- and certainly don’t have to worry about back or neck pain! Well, it turns out that kids do have things to worry about when it comes to back and neck pain. The chiropractors at The Joint see their fair share of children with complaints of pain -- and many of them due to one thing: ergonomics. Here are a few chiropractic tips to help your child create good ergonomic habits that will protect their spine for years to come!
Backpacks
Probably the biggest contributor to back pain for kids and students is their backpack. When used the right way, with the weight balanced with straps placed over each shoulder, they work great! But how many kids do you know who actually wear their backpack like they’re supposed to?
To ensure your child is safely using their backpack, choose one that is the right fit for them, have them wear the straps over each shoulder, and ensure they don’t carry more than 10 percent of their body weight in it at once time.
At School and the Library
When your child is studying at their desk at school, the library, or in their room, it’s important that they:
- Sit with their back resting against the seatback
- Use portable ergonomic devices to help increase comfort and lower strain on their back
- Use ergonomically designed pens and pencils
- Take breaks -- at least once an hour -- to get up, stretch, and change positions
Furthermore, when your child is reading or using a tablet, they need to make sure they’re sitting up straight. They should not lay on their stomach since it will hyperextend the spine and place strain on the neck. Also, have them hold any screens they use at eye level. They shouldn’t hang their head forward and look down or they may develop neck and shoulder pain from the stress being placed on their spines in this position
Encourage your child to make time for play and physical activity! That will help to keep them healthy and ward off fatigue and stress while studying. After all, kids are meant to play!
Taking care of your spine has to start young. The chiropractors at The Joint see patients of all ages, so don't hesitate to make the chiropractor a family affair!
