Following Chiropractic Tips This Holiday Season

By Brandi Swieter

The holidays provide plenty of opportunities for people to get hurt. The season means wrapping gifts, shopping, decorating, and driving, all of which allows back pain to set in quickly if people aren't careful. Following some chiropractic tips this holiday season will help people remain pain-free so they can enjoy their time without having to recover from strains and pains they've developed.

Set Up a Gift Wrap Station

Gift wrapping is a common cause for concern throughout the holiday season. Individuals tend to sit on the floor and lean over their work. People may find themselves reaching for the tape or scissors when they've set them farther away than intended. A gift wrap station will help prevent the pain these things cause. Wrapping should be done standing, or at least sitting at a table where leaning is not required. All necessary materials should be kept in a particular spot so it is ready to go for the next use.

Avoid Bending and Reaching When Decorating

People tend to reach over farther than what they can handle. Many bend down to pick up items before they hang them. These practices should be avoided. They cause extra strain on the body and can lead to serious pain. It's better to bend at the knees and lower the body, using the knees for support, rather than leaning all the way forward and using the back to support the weight of the decorations. It's also more beneficial to move the ladder to the next spot needed to be decorated than trying to reach over to get to it. Pulling a muscle can be avoided if these things are avoided.

Drive with Lumbar Support

Driving for hours on end is often one downside to the holidays. Many people travel to see family, requiring a lot of time spent in the car. It's best to drive with a lumbar support behind the back that will help to prevent pain from setting in.

Stretch Before Shopping

Shopping is another common practice during the holidays. Too many individuals spend hours searching the store shelves for the right gifts for their friends and family. Those who do plan on making holiday purchases should break up their sessions for starters. Shopping in increments is better than doing it one stretch. It's is also important to stretch before heading into the store or mall. All of the walking and exercise can prove hard on the body, especially for those who aren't used to it. Stretching will help to keep the body flexible and better able to handle the activity.
