In or Out of Season, Berries May Improve Health
By Tom Herrin
I am a big seasonal food person. I like to find all of the fresh homegrown foods I can. At least in my mind, they seem to taste better. However, with the many ways we have to ship and store foods, fresh or frozen, there are plenty of things that can be included in our diets that may provide a real boost. I feel like diversity is key to improving much of what we do. It requires little reading or listening to realize that berries are a food that may provide quite a boost to health in many cases, and the great thing is they are not too expensive or out of range for an average budget.
They Are Full of Nutrients
Without a doubt, berries come in a great variety. Blueberries have gotten a lot of attention, but there are many others that are worth looking at. Strawberries seem to be a really common kind in many stores, and they are often sold at considerable discounts from time to time. They contain 150 percent of the RDI for Vitamin C. Many berries are high in this important vitamin. What is even better is that most of them are reasonably low in calories but can still satisfy that sweet tooth.
They Have Plenty of Antioxidants
Much has been said about the ability of antioxidants in managing or preventing diseases. Berries are high in them. Antioxidants have shown promise in combating several cancers such as mouth, esophagus, breast, and colon. They also seem to help in fighting some communicable diseases. Foods high in antioxidants are seen as extremely helpful in promoting better health as they are generally considered effective in protecting the cells in the body.
They May Help Manage a Few Other Common Health Issues
Berries have shown some success in helping with blood sugar management. They have been known to help keep blood vessels working as they should. This helps with maintaining a good blood pressure. Berries can also help manage blood sugar and insulin response to meals that are high in carbohydrates. You may add the fact that they seem to help with inflammation. These things all go into making berries another very significant food that can be used to enhance their abilities to help improve health.
