Work Up to Workouts with Disc Golf
By Tom Herrin
As people evaluate their needs to improve conditioning, there may be a considerable amount of thought given to exactly which route to take. Jumping into an exercise routine can be demanding and, in some cases, dangerous to health if they have not done enough preparation to begin such a workout. Playing a game can always be an easier way to get started, particularly if it's one that can be played casually. I have an interest in what people do, so I take notice when I see something new. While it is not new, disc golf has become quite popular in a lot of communities. The evidence of the course may be seen hanging around in various locations in parks or playgrounds.
It Can Be Good Exercise
The game can be played slowly or fast-paced, depending on the nature of the group playing. For the casual player, it can be done by walking the course. As people play an entire game, they will likely walk a mile or more during the hour or so of play. Enjoying the park can be an added perk. Walking while throwing the disc may provide exercise while people become lost in the game itself. Once they get hooked on the game, they may find themselves playing regularly. Some choose to run or jog as they play to add an extra element.
It Can Help People Learn Patience
Most people live in a hurried existence. Using more patience is a precious quality. Playing disc golf can help people to become more patient. Since it requires some skill development and strategy to navigate around the many obstacles present on the course, learning patience may be a natural consequence.
It Can Provide Relief from Stress
The aforementioned busy lifestyle affects most of us. We all need outlets from this. Disc golf may be played in all kinds of situations. It can be great for groups who prefer something that is not overly competitive, though they may adjust the level accordingly. It can be a good fit for families as it works well with a variety of ages and abilities. You can even play alone for practice. If you have been looking for something to jump start your conditioning program, spend a few dollars for a plastic flying disc and start enjoying better health.
