A Good Vacation May Be Better Than a Workout Plan

By Tom Herrin

In general, it is not just one single thing that makes people healthy or unhealthy.  Of course, there are those exceptions. Some bad habits can ruin health without any help.  People wanting to make their health the best it can be must look at all of the available options.  Exercising is a necessity. Eating right and getting quality rest are equally important. When people look at all of these things in a to-do list, they often fail to include the importance of taking a vacation.  It can be every bit as critical as the others, but it simply does not occur as regularly. Because of this, it may be overlooked. Vacations should be included in any plans for better health, regardless of what time of the year they need to happen.

They May Help Mentally

People can get into ruts and virtually become stagnant mentally.  The same old routine often does not offer enough variation. New thought and creativity may no be required.  Studies have shown that new experiences can stimulate the brain. Its neuroplasticity is what is stimulated in order to perform new operations.  Creativity can be enhanced when people visit new places or see new things. When the brain recognizes this, it basically rises to the challenge. Mental stimulation is good for people in several ways.  This certainly has the possibility of deterring some of the problems people have with dementia or similar things.

They May Help With Depression

Emotions can be strong and have major effects on the body.  When people are depressed, they may lose the ability to perform tasks efficiently.  They may have low energy and be more prone to accidents or injury as well. Taking a vacation has been known to reduce depression.  While that may seem to be a given, many people fail to take it to heart enough to actually act on that need.

They May Build Stronger Relationships

I heard recently that people who function well in their 80s have had good relationships in their 50s.  Relationships are something that can have a huge effect on people. Bad ones can disrupt life completely. Good ones can make more productive workers and better decision makers.  Taking a vacation has the possibility of improving family relations. My family always gained from a vacation. We shared experiences and conversation that otherwise would not have happened.  If you have to make choices about what to do, put vacations near the top of your to-do list. If finances or other things pose restrictions, there are plenty of things nearby that can still create a good experience.  Even taking time to go to Six Flags or one of the local water parks can be a great opportunity.
