Improve Health with a Fast-paced Game
By Tom Herrin
It doesn’t take a seasoned athlete to play some games. Sports that are played for pure fun can be enjoyed by the entire family playing a pretty big role in building better health. Just about all people need activity, and one of the best ways to get it is to play a game. Games can accomplish the goal of getting more exercise without having to endure what many people consider the drudgery of the task. A really fun game that can be played by all ages and abilities is field or gym hockey, depending on the kind of facility available. It can be highly competitive or moderate and relatively easy.
It Can Provide a Good Cardio Workout
Most people looking for activities want to find something that can improve the cardiovascular system. Some of this is due to the fact that so many are really sedentary. They have jobs that involve a lot of sitting, or maybe standing, with very little actual moving around. Field hockey can provide some pretty good moving. People will run for short distances, then walk while they are not in the action, then they will run again. For those who are older or not ready for all of that, it is easy to modify the rules. Either way, the on and off action can be great for cardio.
It May Help with Balance and Coordination
As people age, they often have more problems with simple things. Anytime they can find something to improve their ability to maintain balance and/or coordination, it can carry over to their everyday lives. As people experience a decline in these areas, they are more likely to have accidents and injuries. Things that improve balance and coordination will go a long way toward building a better total health picture. Hockey requires people to move as they perform tasks, thus it can sharpen these skills.
It May Help You Lose a Pound or Two
Most of us struggle with finding ways to burn calories. Though diet is the real key to weight loss, when you can increase your activity and burn a few calories, your success rate will be much higher. Playing something such as field hockey is a great way to burn those calories without feeling as if it is such a chore. Since it is a fun game, you are sure to get lost in the action and get far more exercise than you may realize. Whether it is with family or a group of friends, give this sport a try. You may find it addicting.
