Are You Nuts About Compression Clothing
By Tom Herrin
There are plenty of fads in just about every era. That is, those who market clothing and other items for whatever particular popular use is out there know how to appeal to those who are the target buyers. This is not to say that there are not some good things out there, but everyone needs to evaluate their own needs and what kinds of benefits are available. One of those that has been seen quite a bit in the last few years is compression clothing. It can do some really good things for some, but maybe not in every case.
Stockings Have a Real Purpose
Many people who have had surgery or some other kind of procedure had likely been told to wear compression socks or stockings. In general, they help maintain pressure on the outside of the blood vessels so that blood will not pool but will return to the heart. It is a common practice that seems to have considerable merit. They appear to be helpful in preventing clots.
Vests or Shirts May or May Not Help
As in the cases similar to the socks, compression vests or shirts may help in preventing problems in some certain cases; however, they are more likely worn to help provide a feeling of support and comfort during or after exercise. They may help serve as a reminder to manage posture or anything related to holding the upper body in a better position. They should not be expected to provide a miraculous outcome. They should not be worn with the belief that they will provide a fitter look for a body that may not be quite ready. In this case, they may do the opposite and disappoint the wearer should they pass a mirror.
Shorts or Pants Can Feel Good
Wearing compression shorts or pants have become pretty popular. They may provide a better feeling of support and help the body to feel less tired after changing into street clothes. I have worn them under other shorts when I refereed a little soccer. I would have to say I had a mixed experience. They did make me feel that my muscles were not as tired. Very much like the shirts, wearer beware. I have seen people wear them well. I have also seen people who obviously had never seen themselves wearing them as they really look. They will not hide imperfections nearly as well as looser fitting clothes. They are worth a try for some activities.
