Can Working Shifts Affect Health?

By Tom Herrin

In this day and age, many towns and cities across the nation are open night and day.  The times in which people rolled up the sidewalks when it got dark are long since gone away.  The modern worker is a very different kind of person with completely different demands.  Production is the critical factor, understandably, in order to remain competitive and stay in business.  For that, many workers are required to help maintain schedules that are, to say the least, unnatural.  While people relied on the sun to govern much of their day at one time, they now do so with the support of artificial light.  The good side is that they are able to keep operating around the clock, the bad side is that it sometimes has a negative effect on health.

Can Health Be at Risk?

Some studies have shown that people who work shifts may be losing more than time in the sunlight.  In some cases, people have been shown to be at a greater risk of developing diabetes early on when the work shifts.  Others have had indicated increased instances of cardiac problems.  Still other studies have revealed that the rate of accidents associated with those who work shifts is greater.  It is not a  matter to take lightly.

Can Anything Be Done to Help?

With the wealth of information available today, people are fortunate in that there are good measures that may be taken to protect health for those who must deal with working shifts.  While they may not be anything earthshaking, they are sound principles.  One is to be sure to establish a good schedule for eating.  Too many times, people who are unable to eat family meals tend to depend on too much junk or poor quality food.  Making certain to have a diet that is nutritionally sound is critical.  Getting the right amount of good exercise is another thing that can help.  Good sleep is always important and sometimes hard to get.

Take Charge of Your Life

If you are one of those affected by working shifts, remember that you are the one most in charge.  Make a priority of taking the right kinds of steps.  Be sure to include ways to remain involved in family or social activities while keeping a balance of work and rest.  If you will take steps to stay informed about what is best in your personal situation, you will have a far better chance of continuing to experience the good health you deserve.
