Finding the Right Activity May Provide Better Exercise
By Tom Herrin
Even though most of us know we need to get more exercise, a large number of people continue to neglect to do so. Some of it is just bad habits. It takes a lot of incentive to get up and get going. For some, the mere thought of going through some kind of bland workout can turn us off before we have the chance to be turned on. If we really have a desire to improve on that, finding a way to make exercise more fun may be the way to go. Like so many other things, many of us have trouble thinking outside the box when it comes to physical activity. There is actually a whole new world of things out there if we will just be more open.
Have You Ever Jumped on a Trampoline?
As kids, just about everyone liked the idea of jumping on a trampoline. That continuous bouncing seemed to keep us pretty well entertained. It usually was pretty easy because the bouncing returned us each time. There didn't appear to be much work involved. Many people now use these small trampolines for exercise. They are pretty compact but can allow us to be active and burn a few calories. Let's face it, most of us will try a few things while we are doing so since we begin to feel a little braver. It can be a good alternative.
Swimming Has Always Been a Good Alternative
Chances are that when we were younger, we thought of swimming as a great form of recreation. It still is, to some extent, but many people do successfully as they age. Once we have to be concerned about sore body parts, swimming may be a good answer. It offers low-impact activity that can build endurance and burn calories. Many people swim daily for a few minutes at a time to manage their health. It is a great alternative.
Try a Slower-Paced Game
For those of us who enjoy a little competition, there are some good games we can play. Tennis can be played at a variety of paces, but it will ramp up our activity quite a bit. If you have a companion who will agree to play it slow, it is great. If you want a game that is guaranteed to be slower, golf may be a good option. If you play without using a cart, you will chart some serious steps as you play. If you enjoy it, you may end up playing much more and get the exercise you need.
