The Stars May Not Be the Only Game in Town
By Tom Herrin
Some games are simply that. The good thing about games, or sports, is they are really designed for fun. People need outlets that can allow them to get exercise and get their minds off of whatever creates stress in their lives. While watching the pros can be enjoyable, people don’t have to be pros to play simple games. Field hockey may not be the same as ice hockey, but it has a lot in common and can provide a high level of activity that may be played by the whole family or a group of friends. People don’t have to be in top shape to play as it can be played in a moderate form in which those of any age or ability can participate.
It May Provide Good Cardio Workout
Anytime people can participate in a sport that can be fairly nonstop with on-and-off action, it can get the blood flowing. Increased blood flow can mean that more oxygen is supplied to the cells while more waste is removed. The heart can become stronger at the same time. People don’t have to be in top shape to begin with as they can start slowly and increase their intensity as they get in better shape.
It May Help with Weight Loss
For those who seriously want to lose weight, cutting calories and developing a healthy diet is a must. Once they have done this, finding some way to increase activity and burn calories can really provide results. Playing field hockey can provide enough steady action to be an effective calorie burner. This is particularly good with such an activity that involves running or jogging while maneuvering a ball or puck around a playing field.
It May Improve Mental Strength
We all have need of some kind of exercise at times if only to increase the release of good chemicals in our bodies. It can help to prevent depression and relieve stress. It can also help us to make decisions under pressure with a clearer vision. Strategy is an important part of the game, and this will often carry over into other parts of our lives. Many jobs require us to have creative approaches to solutions to problems. It may not be everyone’s answer to health, but toss it out there, and see the response of kids and/or friends. We have seen it be an instant hit with ours.
